Planting a strip of garlic on your balcony or in your small vegetable garden not only allows you to harvest fresh garlic leaves, garlic sprouts, and plump garlic bulbs at any time, but also provides a perfect opportunity to experience the complete joy of planting and harvesting. Garlic has strong vitality and is relatively easy to manage. By following the steps below, you too can grow plump and enviable garlic bulbs.

Step 1: Select high-quality seeds and the best season for planting. Garlic seeds, also known as garlic bulbs, should not be sourced from supermarkets where edible garlic (which may have undergone bud suppression treatment) is sold. It is recommended to purchase garlic bulbs specifically for planting from agricultural supply stores, preferably those with plump garlic cloves, uniform size, and no signs of disease or damage.
Variety selection: For balcony potted plants, given limited space, priority can be given to single-head garlic varieties (such as Yunnan single-head garlic), which are easy to manage and yield stable results.
· Vegetable garden planting: Local high-yield varieties can be selected. Common purple-skinned garlic has a strong garlic flavor and is cold-resistant; white-skinned garlic has thin skins, multiple cloves, and is storable.
Planting time: "Plant garlic early during the White Dew, late during the Cold Dew, and at the Autumnal Equinox, it's just right." This is a northern agricultural proverb. The core idea is to ensure that the garlic sprouts grow 4-6 true leaves before winter, so as to survive the winter safely.
· Northern regions: It is mostly sown in autumn from late September to mid-to-late October.
· Southern region: It can be sown in autumn from September to November, or in spring from February to March (but garlic sown in autumn is usually fuller).

Step 2: Preparation for sowing and key techniques
1. Soil preparation for pots:
· Container: For balcony planting, choose a flower pot or planting box with a depth of not less than 20 centimeters and a drainage hole at the bottom.
Soil: Garlic prefers fertile soil and is sensitive to waterlogging. It is best to use loose and fertile sandy loam soil. A mixture of garden soil, decomposed leaf soil, and coarse sand in the ratio of 5:4:1 can be used, mixed with an appropriate amount of decomposed organic fertilizer or slow-release fertilizer as a base fertilizer.
2. Pre-sowing treatment:
· Peeling and grading: Peel the garlic into individual cloves, retaining the base bulb disc (rooting site). Peel off part of the outer skin to facilitate water absorption, but do not damage the garlic flesh.
· Soaking for germination (optional): Soak the garlic cloves in clean water for 12-24 hours, or soak them in a carbendazim solution for 15 minutes for disinfection, which can promote uniform germination.
3. Sowing Technique:· Planting Depth and Orientation: Place the pointed end of the garlic clove upward and insert it into the soil. The depth should be approximately 2-3 times the height of the garlic clove (about 3-5 cm). The mnemonic is "deep for onions, shallow for garlic", but if it's too shallow, the garlic may "jump out", and if it's too deep, the emergence from the soil will be slow.
· Spacing: Row spacing of 15-20 cm, and plant spacing of 8-12 cm. For planting on balconies, close planting is acceptable, but ventilation must be ensured.

Step 3: Four Essential Factors for Growth Management1. Watering: After sowing, thoroughly water the soil. During the germination period, keep the soil moist. During the seedling stage, follow the principle of "see dry, see wet". Before winter, water once to prevent frost damage. After the spring thaw, it is the peak water demand period for garlic, especially during the bolting and bulb expansion stages. Ensure sufficient water. Stop watering one week before harvesting to facilitate storage.
2. Fertilization: Garlic thrives on fertilizer. Apart from the base fertilizer, topdressing should be emphasized three times:· Seedling-inducing fertilizer: After all seedlings have emerged, apply a thin layer of nitrogen fertilizer (such as decomposed soybean cake water).
· Greening Fertilizer: After the temperature rises in early spring, apply compound ferti
